Why?
  • To notice patterns in the world.
  • To better understand how people adapt to living in a mountainous region.
  • To better understand the connection between geography and people.

5.  Describe where the Andes Mountains are in at least 5 different ways.   5 minutes

6.  Appropriately comment on other students blogs: Give a compliment; respond to something specific (what did it make you think, do you agree/disagree - why), extend the conversation (add a relevant question; share what other ideas came to your mind as you read the post); do NOT critique their writing/thoughts.

7.  Investigate your assigned vertical climate zone of the Andes Mountains.   10 minutes

8.  Share with someone who had the same vertical climate zone and check for accuracy.   5 minutes

Parents: Don't Ask Your Child, "What Did You Do in School Today?"

Instead, you could ask your child the following:
  • Where are the Andes Mountains?
  • Describe what the vertical climate zone you investigated is like.
  • What was the most important or interesting thing you learned?

1 With another near you, discuss - in your own words - why you are in social studies today (see above). 2 minutes

2.  When you go up in elevation, the higher you go, the colder it gets.  Draw a mountain, divide it vertically - with horizontal lines - into four sections, and, without any resources, in each section list what life might be like there (think food, clothing, shelter, economic activity). 5 minutes

3.  Make a copy of the South America overview.  Read through it.  Ask questions.  10 minutes

4.  Make a copy of the South America vocab.  Read through it.  Ask questions.   10 minutes

5.  Share your mountain with the class.   5 minutes

6.  Based on the overview, vocab, and insights from the mountain share, discuss how people would adapt to living in the Andes.   10 minutes
7.  Describe where the Andes are in at least 7 different ways (relative location)   10 minutes

Instead, you could ask your child the following:
  • Explain why people would have to adapt to living in the Andes differently at different elevations.
  • What was the most important or interesting thing you learned?
