1.  Discuss with someone near you what you will be doing in class today and why (see above).       1 minute

2.   Whole class:  Ask questions using deductive reasoning (what do you know) in order to figure out what is in the mystery chest.        10 minutes

3.   Small groups:  Examine the artifacts, and have a discussion about the following in the order of the questions.  You are not doing searches.               15 minutes
  • What do you notice about the artifact (materials, shape, colors, objects, etc.)?
  • What is it? Why do you think it was made / What was its purpose? Justify your thoughts to your group.
  • Who do you think would have used the artifact?  Justify your thoughts to your group.
4.   By yourself:  Choose one of the artifacts.  In your scrap paper doc or on your own paper, write an explanation of the artifact using the questions above as a guide.  You are not doing searches.               10 minutes

5.  Whole class share:   Individuals will share their ideas about each artifact.  We will then reveal what the artifact actually is.                15 minutes
