2. Brainstorm on scrap paper jobs people would need for a team to play 20 questions against another team as they are playing against you.     5 minutes

  • To better understand and practice how to determine and describe where places are.

1.  Discuss with someone near you what you will be doing in class today and why (see above).   1 minute

2. Make sure you have a Geography Alive textbook.  Open to page 577, and examine the map.     5 minutes

3.  By yourself, answer the following in your scrap paper doc or on scrap paper on the back table:      25 minutes
  • What is the absolute location of Freetown, Sierra Leone (it's on the west coast)? HAVE YOUR WORK CHECKED BY MR.d'E.
  • What is the absolute location of Harare, Zimbabwe (it's in southern Africa)? HAVE YOUR WORK CHECKED BY MR.d'E.
  • Where is Khartoum, Sudan in relationship to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia? HAVE YOUR WORK CHECKED BY MR.d'E.

Today in class you will

  • use absolute locations.
  • use relative locations.
  • use latitude and longitude.

Why?
  • To better understand the map as a tool for learning.
  • To better understand and practice how to determine and describe where places are.

1.  Take a copy of the map from the front table & have a box of colored pencils to use.   1 minutes

2.  Do the following to the map:      25 minutes
  • Trace the equator green.
  • Trace the Prime Meridian yellow.
  • Draw and trace the Tropic of Cancer blue.
  • Draw and trace the Tropic of Capricorn Orange.
  • Draw an appropriate compass rose.
  •  lightly shade the eastern hemisphere grey.
  • Lightly shade the western hemisphere red
  • Put darker diagonal grey lines to show the northern hemisphere.
  • Put darker diagonal red lines to show the southern hemisphere.
  • Put the letter A where 40* N 40*E is.
  • Put the letter B where 30*S 90*E is. 
  • Draw an appropriate scale so that 15* = 1035miles.
  • What is the relative location of A to B? (Where is A in relationship to B?)

3.  Class check.     5 minutes

4. Practice      10 minutes

5. Go to the map of Syria linked here. Answer the following at the top of your social studies scrap paper doc (date, then work)     15 minutes
  1. What is the map showing? 
  2. Which city is the capital of Syria.
  3. Identify one industry in Aleppo.
  4. Identify one mineral deposit in Aleppo.
6.  Class discussion.     5 minutes
