10/13 Five Themes of Geography

  • Whenever you need help, please ask for it.
  • Please write your homework in your assignment book.
  • Please review the goal and agenda for the day (posted in the classroom).

Today in class you will
  • think like a geographer.
  • begin to understand the five themes of geography.
Why?
  • To become better geographic thinkers.
  • To develop your geographic lenses.

DIRECTIONS
  If you are ever waiting for a direction, please use PlaceSpotting or Google A Day. (Don't search for the question or use a Google A Day answer site.)

1.  Discuss with someone near you what you will be doing in class today and why (see above).       1 minute

2.  You are continuing your work with the five themes of geography that you started last week. The themes give you lenses through which you can examine the world. Work through each section on the document in your social studies folder that you copied last week. Check in with Mr.d’E when needed.

REMEMBER: You need to check in after you complete a theme section.       10 minutes

3. Give yourself a quick standing or stretching break and then go back to number 2.        1 minute

4. Only after you have completed all theme sections AND checked in with Mr. d'E will you proceed to the next directions.        10 minute These will only be viewed and used when you get to the MY MAPS section.

10/11 Analyzing Summaries

Today in class you will
  • analyze summaries to identify strengths and weaknesses.

Why?
  • To better extract key ideas from passages
  • To develop your ability to write succinct summaries.

DIRECTIONS
  If you are ever waiting for a direction, please use PlaceSpotting or Google A Day. (Don't search for the question or use a Google A Day answer site.)

1.  Discuss with someone near you what you will be doing in class today and why (see above).       1 minute

2.  Review with a partner nearby: What is a topic, what is a main idea, what is a summary?.       2 minutes

3. Whole class discussion.         5 minutes
         
4.  With your group          5 minutes

  • read a summary aloud
  • discuss the summary against the criteria
  • rate the summary against each of the criteria
  • with the marker, write specific suggestions on the large paper that the author could use to improve the summary


5. Rotate clockwise when the teacher tells you and repeat #4.

6. Whole group discussion         15 minutes

  • positives of a strong summary
  • negatives of a weak summary
  • identify the strongest summary
  • identify the weakest summary
