NOTE: Links to Google Classroom, Google Docs, or other Google Apps for Education will require students to log in to their school account.

NOTE: Due to the drop period in our schedule, there are times that your student might be working on a previous day's agenda. That will be noted at the top of the post.

9/29 Absolute and Relative Location

Whenever you need help, please ask for it.

Please write your homework in your assignment book.
Please review the goal and agenda for the day (posted in the classroom).

Today in class you will
  •  identify parts of the map.
  • use absolute locations.
  • use relative locations.
  • use latitude and longitude.

Why?
  • To better understand the map as a tool for learning.
  • To better understand and practice how to determine and describe where places are.

1.  Discuss with someone near you what you will be doing in class today and why (see above).   1 minute

2. Make sure you have a Geography Alive textbook.  Open to page 577, and examine the map.     5 minutes

3.  By yourself, answer the following in your scrap paper doc or on scrap paper on the back table:      25 minutes
  • What is the absolute location of Freetown, Sierra Leone (it's on the west coast)? HAVE YOUR WORK CHECKED BY MR.d'E.
  • What is the absolute location of Harare, Zimbabwe (it's in southern Africa)? HAVE YOUR WORK CHECKED BY MR.d'E.
  • Where is Khartoum, Sudan in relationship to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia? HAVE YOUR WORK CHECKED BY MR.d'E.

4. Practice - see Mr. d'E     10 minutes

Parents: Instead of Asking Your Child,
"What Did You Do in School Today?"
Ask them.......
  • Why would you use absolute location and relative location?
