3/9 Settlement Sketchnote

Please write your homework in your assignment book.
Please review the goal and agenda for the day (posted in the classroom).

Today in class you will 

• begin to understand how climate, physical features, and natural resources influence settlement and economics.

Why?

• To notice patterns in the world.
• To better understand why cities developed where they are.
• To better understand the connection between geography and people.

1.  With another near you, discuss - in your own words - why you are in social studies today (see above). 2 minutes

2.  With others in your group, review the main ideas of the document you worked with on Monday and your overall understanding.  2 minutes

3.  Sketchnote:  By yourself draw and color a sketchnote that gets across the main points/ideas - with specific examples and vocabulary - about the influence of physical features, climate, and natural resources on settlement. Check to see how well your ideas are addressing the standard on the wall. 35 minutes

4.  Write at least four sentences to address the following (consider spelling and grammar):  7 minutes

• Explain the most interesting thing you learned about the influence of climate, physical features, and natural resources on settlement.
• Explain the part of your sketchnote of which you are most proud.

5.  Have someone else who is done writing, read through your writing to make sure it makes sense and is clear, uses appropriate spelling, and uses appropriate grammar.  Then, create one new blog post with the following:  5 minutes

• your sketchnote
• your "at least four sentences" you just finished
• an interesting title for the post
• the following labels:  social studies, settlement, climate, physical features, natural resources, sketchnotes

Parents: Don't Ask Your Child, "What Did You Do in School Today?"

Instead, you could ask your child the following: 

• What is the impact of climate physical features and natural resources on where cities/population centers have developed?
• What are different climate types and what are they like?
