Today in class you will 

• begin to understand how climate, physical features, and natural resources influence settlement and economics in  the Amazon.
• begin to identify pros and cons regarding "land use" and "sustainable development" in the Amazon.
• identify main ideas from a reading.

Why?

• To notice patterns in the world.
• To better understand how people adapt to living in a rainforest region.
• To better understand how people use natural resources.
• To better understand the connection between geography and people.

1.  With another near you, discuss - in your own words - why you are in social studies today (see above). 2 minutes

2.  By yourself:  
A) Determine any questions you have or confusion you have about any of the information regarding land use conflict in the Amazon.  Ask for help to get your questions answered or for clarity to be yours.
B) Review the top down organizer on the back board. Determine any questions you have or confusion you have about argument writing: introduction, body, conclusion, claim, counterclaim, rebuttal, using evidence.  Ask for help to get your questions answered or for clarity to be yours. up to 40 minutes

3.  By yourself:  Create and color a detailed sketchnote about land use conflict in the Amazon.    up to 40 minutes

4. Post the sketchnote to your blog with a several sentence response to the following typed beneath the sketchnote:  What was the most surprising thing you learned about the conflict in the Amazon?  Why was this surprising? What can you relate it to? (You should not copy and paste the question/prompt to set up your answer.)
