4/7 Introducing the Amazon

Whenever you need help, please ask for it.

Please write your homework in your assignment book.
Please review the goal and agenda for the day (posted in the classroom).

Today in class you will 

• begin to understand how climate, physical features, and natural resources influence settlement and economics in  the Amazon.
• begin to understand what is meant by "land use" and "sustainable development."

Why?

• To notice patterns in the world.
• To better understand how people adapt to living in a rainforest region.
• To better understand how people use natural resources.
• To better understand the connection between geography and people.

1.  With another near you, discuss - in your own words - why you are in social studies today (see above). 2 minutes

NOTE: Whenever you are waiting for Mr.d'E or others so you can complete a next step, appropriately comment on other students blogs: Give a compliment; respond to something specific (what did it make you think, do you agree/disagree - why), extend the conversation (add a relevant question; share what other ideas came to your mind as you read the post); do NOT critique their writing/thoughts. You may ALSO reply appropriately to comments left on your blog posts.

2. By yourself: On scrap paper from the back table, write your name, date, and period in the upper right corner AND list at least 5 things you know about the Amazon region.   5 minutes

3. Class discussion.  5 minutes

4. By yourself: Go to Google Classroom and answer the question which is the first item in the stream, and then, respond to others.    5 minutes

5. Class discussion.  5 minutes

6. With your group and without using any resources, come up with a definition for "sustainable development." Make sure everyone is involved in the discussion. 5 minutes

7. Class discussion.  5 minutes

8. Group discussion: What do you think will motivate different people in the Amazon? 5 minutes

9. Class discussion.  5 minutes

I suggest you view at least to 7:15.

• What made you go "hmmm," "huh," "golly," "whoa,"
• What questions does it make you think?
• What life lesson can you learn from this?

• What have you found out about the Amazon?
• What, so far, do you find interesting about the Amazon? Why?
