Reminders
- Whenever you need help, please ask for it.
- Please write your homework in your assignment book.
- Please review the goal and agenda for the day (posted in the classroom).
Today in class you will
- Discuss your chosen book.
Why?
- To develop your reading and discussion skills
- To develop your understanding of geography.
DIRECTIONS
If you are ever waiting for a direction, please use PlaceSpotting or Google A Day. (Don't search for the question or use a Google A Day answer site.)
1. Discuss with someone near you what you will be doing in class today and why (see above). 1 minute
2. By yourself: Write a brief narrative summary (different than an informational summary like we've been doing) of the book ONLY to the point where your group agreed to read. Follow the format below. 5 minutes
To summarize use Somebody...wanted...but...so...then…
- Somebody: Who is the main character?
- Wanted: What does the main character want or need?
- But: What gets in the way of the main character?
- So: What does the main character do about it?
- Then: What was the resolution/result to the story?
Example: Even though Luke Skywalker wanted to join the rebels, his aunt and uncle forbade him. But then, his aunt and uncle were killed by the Empire. So, Luke started training as a Jedi, and then he blew up the Death Star.
3. Share your summary aloud with your group. Talk about similarities and differences. 5 minutes
4. Choose one of the summaries. Each person create a one page (filled) colorful scene so that there is a sequence of pictures/scenes to get across the ideas in the summary. Don't include words. 20 minutes
5. Whole class gallery walk. (If you are waiting, go to the next direction.) 10 minutes
6. Discuss with your group: So far, do you like the book, do you not like the book, 20 minutes

Parents: Instead of Asking Your Child,
"What Did You Do in School Today?"
"What Did You Do in School Today?"
Ask them.......
- What connections did you see between the five themes of geography, basic economic concepts, and the Global Goals?
- What were the hardest connections to make? Why were they difficult?
