2/26 Factors that Influence Settlement; Climate

Today in class you will 

• demonstrate understanding about economic systems, standard of living, and trade/globalization.
• analyze a learning standard.

Why?

• To better understand basic economic concepts.
• To take ownership of your learning.
• To better understand what you are expected to understand.

1.  Take out your scrap paper on which you, reworded the following learning standard so that a 5th grader would understand it (feel free to use resources):   1 minute    

     Explain how the following five factors have influenced settlement and the 

     economies of major South American countries: 

          A. absolute and relative locations 

          B. climate 

          C. major physical characteristics 

          D. major natural resources   

          E. population size   

2.  With your group:  Discuss what you came up with.  Take the best parts of each and make a new version which is different from everyone else's. This is not just saying one person's is the best.  10 minutes

3.  Share with the class. 10 minutes

4.  Discuss with your group:  What are the two basic parts of weather? What is the difference between weather and climate?  1 minute

5.  Share & clarify  5 minutes

6.  By yourself:  Do a Google search for "climate types."  Jot down what you find out about different climate types.  5 minutes

7.  Classify climate types - as a group; then review with class. 15 minutes
