  •  analyze visuals to determine standard of living.
  • analyze data to determine standard of living.

Why?
  • To develop your understanding of standard of living.
  • To become more understanding of others.
  • To develop your critical thinking.

1.  Discuss with someone near you what you will be doing in class today and why (see above).   1 minute

2.  Discuss with someone near you the five factors we are looking at to determine standard of living.              1 minute

3.  Remember that GDP helps show a country's productivity. Check out the map linked here. Discuss with someone near you about three things it tells you about the world that can be concluded from the map.             2 minutes

4. Continue this work:  In the Google Doc created in your social studies folder, describe what each of the five factors (wealth, health, education, infrastructure, and leisure time) show about a place's standard of living.  Use the hyperdoc linked here to lead your investigation.              25 minute

5. Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistic that combines GDP per capita, life expectancy, and literacy rate. Jot in your scrap paper: What conclusions can you make about the HDI map linked here?             5 minutes

6.  Examine how the average American life compares to other countries a the site linked here. In your scrap paper, jot down patterns that you notice.             5 minutes

Parents: Instead of Asking Your Child,
"What Did You Do in School Today?"
Ask them.......
  • What five factors begin to describe a place's standard of living?
  • What have you learned about the five factors?
  • What is the most interesting thing you have learned from the hyperdoc?
