  •  analyze visuals to determine standard of living.
  • analyze data to determine standard of living.

Why?
  • To develop your understanding of standard of living.
  • To become more understanding of others.
  • To develop your critical thinking.

1.  Discuss with someone near you what you will be doing in class today and why (see above).   1 minute

2.  Finish this work:  In the Google Doc created in your social studies folder, describe what each of the five factors (wealth, health, education, infrastructure, and leisure time) show about a place's standard of living.  Use the hyperdoc linked here to lead your investigation. You should easily be done in.....             20 minutes

3.  Make a copy of the news article at this link and move it to your social studies folder.  Read it critically and answer the questions at the end of the news article thoroughly.            25 minutes

4. Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistic that combines GDP per capita, life expectancy, and literacy rate. Jot in your scrap paper: What conclusions can you make about the HDI map linked here?             5 minutes

5.  Examine how the average American life compares to other countries a the site linked here. In your scrap paper, jot down patterns that you notice.             15 minutes

Parents: Instead of Asking Your Child,
"What Did You Do in School Today?"
Ask them.......
  • What does GDP per capita have to do with standard of living?
  • What is infrastructure? What does it have to do with standard of living?
  • What was the news article about water about?
