  •  assess countries' standard of living.

Why?
  • To develop your understanding of standard of living.
  • To become more understanding of others.
  • To develop your critical thinking.

1.  Discuss with someone near you what you will be doing in class today and why (see above).   1 minute

2.   Review your work from yesterday; double check with the data table at your table and the hyperdoc.              5 minutes

3. Pair with someone who had a different country. Speak about what you determined about the country's standard of living. Give feedback to the other person. Do they use the data? Does what they say make sense? Does the "show" part explain about the data?            7 minutes

4.  In Google Classroom, review the information about Assessing Standard of Living.
7 minutes
5. Whole class discussion.                10 minutes

6. With your table group, write statements that clearly address the following:               20 minutes
  • What does GDP per capita indicate about wealth?
  • What does population below the poverty line indicate about wealth?
  • What does life expectancy indicate about health?
  • What does infant mortality rate indicate about health?
  • What does doctors per 1000 people indicate about health?
  • What does literacy rate indicate about education?
  • What does Human Development Index indicate about standard of living?
  • What does population indicate about standard of living?

7. Follow the directions and work with the information in the doc linked here.               20 minutes

Parents: Instead of Asking Your Child,
"What Did You Do in School Today?"
Ask them.......
  • What data can you use to analyze a country's standard of living?
  • How does the data show about standard of living?
